• The electricity used to keep our lights burning creates 39 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
  • last year26 countries had water shortages and one third of agricultural land was lightly degraded, half was moderately degraded, and 16% strongly or extremely degraded.
  • in the U.S., the environmental protection agency (epa) estimates that pesticides contaminate the groundwater in 38 states, polluting the primary sources of drinking water for more than half the country's population.
  • one pound (.453 kg) of chicken requires 660 gallons (3,000liters) of water and 6 pounds (2.72 kg) of feed.
  • more than two thirds of the world's marine fish stocks are being fished at or beyond their level of maximum productivity. 25% of those stocks are already either depleted from overfishing or in serious risk of depletion because of current overharvesting

  • coral reefs, home to over 25% of all marine life, are among the world's most fragile ecosystems. if human destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will die in the next 40 years.

we think the world's vast oceans have a limitless capacity to provide our food and absorb our waste. yet already 70% of the world's fish stocks are over-exploited - and some have collapsed

fish is a staple food for more than 30% of the worlds population.

we generate 350 million metric tons of hazardous waste. We pollute rivers, seas, and the city air. The soil suffers from mis-use and chemicals, while above our heads the ozone layer fades away, exposing us to killer rays

Coral reefs, home to over 25% of all marine life, are among the world's most fragile ecosystems. If human destruction continues, 70% of the world's coral reefs will die in the next 40 years.

for every 1 the developing world sends in grants to developing countries, 9 comes back in debt repayments

the message is clear. we have to stop polluting the seas and the water for water is the element that sustains humans on this planet. if we want to survive, we must save the oceans. changing weather patterns, unseasonal rains etc will take their toll on us. we have to stop thinking that the ocean is a limitless dumping ground everything from satellites to radioactive waste are being dumped.

  • producing a quarter pound (.10 kg) hamburger requires at least 100 gallons (45 kgs.) of water, 1.2 pounds (1/2 kg) of corn and soybean meal and the energy equivalent of one cup (236.6 ml) of gasoline. that burger also causes the loss of one and a quarter pounds (1/2 kg) of top soil and greenhouse gas emissions equal to a 6 mile (9.7 km) drive in a typical American car. meat production uses 40% of the world's grain, grown on one fourth of the world's cropland.
  • if the average household switched entirely from conventional to organic fruits, vegetables and grains, there would be a reduction of 5-6% in water pollution, 9-12% in air pollution and 24% in water use.
  • almost four out of every 10 under-five-year-olds in poor communities have stunted growth and reduced learning capacity
  • 31% of all electricity in the united states is used to run commercial buildings. this rate continues to rise as companies add new office equipment. energy use for office equipment is expected to rise by 500% in the next decade.
